The term “herd immunity” has been commonly used since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to describe a phenomenon in which a large portion of a community (the herd) becomes immune to a disease, making the spread of disease from person to person unlikely. Herd immunity can be reached when a sufficient number of people in the population have recovered from a disease and have developed antibodies against future infection or by vaccinations. After almost a year since COVID-19 started to change our way of life, the first vaccines are about to be released to the public, giving hope to billions of people that a return to normalcy isn’t far away. Companies such as Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna, Oxford/AstraZeneca, etc have worked relentlessly and used the most innovative technologies to be able to rapidly create a solution that could stop the spread of the virus.
MRNA VACCINE
Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine is an mRNA vaccine. In this type of vaccine, the mRNA used to trigger the host’s immune response, which is already relatively unstable on its own and therefore already requires low temperatures to be maintained, is surrounded by lipid nanoparticles which are used to ensure the safe delivery of the genetic material to the target cells. These nanoparticles, if kept at a temperature above -70°C can easily burst, revealing the active vaccine inside and rendering it unusable. This is why the use of Ultra-Low Freezers is imperative with these kinds of products.
Carebios’ safe storage of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines.
Carebios is one of the few companies in the world specialized in the development and manufacturing of medical cold chain solutions and has years of experience in the vaccine cold chain industry. Along with several lines of refrigerators and freezers, we also produce reliable and energy-efficient Ultra-Low Freezers. Our ULTs can store vaccines safely at temperatures as low as -86°C thereby easily guaranteeing that these new vaccines are stored at their intended temperatures. Moreover, Ultra-Low Freezers from Carebios are designed with innovative cooling technology that allows them to operate safely and efficiently at a broad temperature range of -20°C to -86°C.
Furthermore, these products are designed with high-end electronics, including reliable alarms and temperature monitoring systems that ensure a further layer of security for the stored specimens/vaccines. And by using natural refrigerants, Carebios’ Ultra-Low Freezers also ensure sustainable and energy-efficient operations.
